Think of this as the monologs of Koyuki. Everything About this show is from the mind of Koyuki and so you get a lot of his thoughts in the mix. They do something different then normal slice of life shows. They go on the darker side of growing up. I see it as an ‘other side of the tracks’ anime from other shows. You don’t really see adults though unless they are complete assholes and even then, they aren’t much older. There is a lot of waiting in this show and times there really isn’t any talking or music.

The animation is somewhat bland but nice looking in that way. I don’t get what Koyuki’s friend’s hair is doing. He looks like he would be much older then he is with gray side burns and all. Most of the characters seem bland though it’s not like they look all the same. Some do have their own design that is easy to see. I did get mixed up with Koyuke’s girl friend and Maho, Ryusuke’s younger half sister. They look a little too similar for me to figure it out. Everything has grayness and sort of run down feeling which adds to the garage band feeling. They did really well for what I think was a low budget and made it all fit.

Now when talking about this, I do have to warn that there are places that the artwork really goes down hill on some parts, mostly to show that someone is hard core drunk. Frankly, I never saw someone have such expressions when they were drunk or just drinking so it feels off. Other small parts that this happens is when they zoom way out on characters but that happens a lot in a lot of different shows.

I love the opening of the show in the artwork because they actually used a lot of signs you would normally see in Verges. They play it almost like the old shows of people driving passed so they aren’t just static sign posts and that adds to the fun. The ending art feels like they stole sketch art from the manga and placed it in there.

The voices are pretty good and I feel it’s much better in English then in Japanese because it was set up like a American comic. The Japanese has a lot of something called ‘Engwish’ (That the name?) It means that the people talk broken English, mixed with Japanese. They talk over each other sometimes as well and don’t finish the sentences every once in a while. It’s really hard on the ears for a native English speaker like my self. Sometimes the sink doesn’t work all that well, but at least you can see that they really tried. Since the mouth moments are really realistic, it does sometimes not work.
