Shiki (Anime) add (All reviews)

Highly addictive, and generally suspenseful. Gory when it needs to be, occasionally scary, and often creepy. While this is another vampire anime, it stands apart by taking a fresh approach to the genre, namely, by often presenting the story from the vampires' point of view. Relatedly, the show asks some pretty deep philosophical questions (for an anime) that will have you undoubtedly feeling remorse for the vampires who, early on, you hated, feared, and wanted dead. I also enjoyed the documentary-like feel (keeping track of names, positions, and dates). There are a ton of characters, but the show does a good job of substantially developing the main ones. Artwork is good overall, and the show often uses really interesting effects to convey emotion and meaning.

Biggest drawback is probably that it's never really a question whether the cause of the deaths is vampires, yet about half of the series is dedicated to everyone thinking it's an epidemic. This is a neat approach at first, because it seems a natural medical response to such a series of events, but it gets pretty annoying after awhile, and you're never on the edge of your seat wondering what could be at issue. Instead, much of the series is spent watching the vampires take over the town, until the village finally comes to its senses and discovers the obvious answer. Ending is relatively weak.
