Kagome the reincarnation of a priestess who was once Inuyasha’s lover named Kikyo,
a pervy Monk Miroku,
a demon-hunter Sango,
and a demon-fox boy Shipo.
They are in search of the shattered pieces of a Sacred Jewel that gives the holder great power. If the shards are found and brought together it can even grant a wish (like Dragonball).
The jewel feeds off of good energy (which will make its color sparkly white) or evil energy (which will turn it black).
Inuyasha’s original goal was to collect them to become full demon so he’d be respected by demons and humans (like Naruto), one of these demons include his full-demon older brother Sesshomaru the anti hero.
The main villain Naraku used to be a human named Onigumo, but made a deal with some demons to become a demon (half demon). He also wants the jewel for power or to make Kikyo, the woman he loved, his own.
The back-story is that Onigumo was a bad guy who got into trouble and was burned alive, Kikyo fond him and took care of him. Because of the love he has for her he makes a deal with demons.
Inuyasha is a half-demon who wants to steal the Sacred Jewel from Kikyo who guards it, they eventually fall in love. Kikyo wants to be a normal woman so she convinces Inuyasha to wish to be a full human instead so they could be together. While she was bringing it to him Naraku, disguised as Inuyasha attacks her, mortally wounding her which causes confusion and she attacks Inuyasha, who also is now confused and decides to steal the Jewel to be a full demon. He is hit by her sacred arrow which puts him in a deep sleep. Kikyo dies and is cremated with the Jewel.
When she is reincarnated into Kagome the Jewel is now inside Kagome in the future. Kagome falls down a magical well sending her back in time where the Jewel is ripped from inside her by a demon (she survives), bad-ass Inuyasha is revived, the Jewel gets shattered and spread over Japan, and its adventure time to collect the dragon balls I mean Jewel Shards.
Early in the series Kikyo is brought back to life (not with the dragon balls but by some witch), she wants to kill Inuyasha but she finds out the mishap was a trap by Naraku.
Inuyasha loves Kagome and Kikyo, so we have a love triangle.
Another important element in this anime is Inuyasha’s bad-ass sword the Tetsusaiga which has the power to destroy 100 demons in 1 swing, inherited from his father. The sword can’t be held by a demon and can’t be use by a human, so Inuyasha being half-demon is capable of holding and using it. He’s brother Sasshomaru inherited the Tensaiga with the power to save 100 humans in 1 swing, but he hates humans.
