Season one is dope and I recommend watching, season 2 didn't live up to season 1. I'm anime only & as such some of my critique is indirectly related to the source material.
This review compares S1 to S2
PLOT
Season 2 focuses on "getting stronger" and character development, disregarding aspects that lead to the success of S1.
S1 came with a story from a guy who went from cleaner to Kaiju to joining the organization that defeated Kaiju as we learned many things along the way.
PACING
The pacing in S2 has gotten slower and feels rushed towards the end
WORLDBUILDING
S2 disregarded a huge opportunity when they learned the enemy gained intelligence and a deep understanding of their organization, they even mentioned this meant they had to come up with new strategies the enemy didn't expect.
The only strategy was training recruits faster and giving them better gear and the whole topic was never touched again. It could've given us better insight on key figures and how the organization operates. We could've been given strategy meetings, lore and see how each character contributes to a brainstorm session. In short: it could've done so much more with what was already there.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
It focused too much on character development, especially given the genre.
ACTION SCENES
Less, and not as good as S1. I did like the Kaiju gear though.
HUMOR
They added 1 minute "comedy" skits at the end but shifted the entire tone of the series. In S1 comedy highlighted differences between Kaiju and humans and alleviated the topic of war as well as made the worldbuilding easier to take in. The lack of humor in S2 made the pace slower and wasn't what I expected or hoped for.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I did still enjoy it but nowhere near as much as S1, which was disappointing given the high ratings per episode. I'm unsure what to expect if given another season.
