Let's get something right out of the way. You must be able to judge this anime in standalone format from the graphic novel. In other words if you are coming here to watch the animated version of the novel, you are going to be sorely disappointed that the story does not follow and the characters are much more serious and mysterious, as is the tone of the entire anime.

I for one appreciate this tone immensely as it gives you a sense of questioning that doesn't even end when the series concludes. At the conclusion of the series in fact you are asking even more questions and you are left feeling like the story had really just gotten started.

The target audience for this anime is undoubtedly for more mature audiences, that appreciate good character development, a serious tone, cryptic pasts, and dark themes. If you plan on enjoying it, that is. The target audience required is in need of an attention span and the ability to comprehend more complex ideas that the story and characters are developing in unison.

The story i feel had really just began to take off so it's hard to judge something you haven't seen come full circle for that reason i rate the story at a solid 8.

The animation is my favorite type of animation, the gritty feel of it i wish was still being used today, it really brings a sense darkness and the depth of reality that a lot of modern series just get completely wrong. I realize that is a personal opinion but I can't help but rate it a 9.

The sound gets a solid 7 the introduction theme grows on you a LOT once the anime gets rolling and fits the mood of this anime so dynamically it would be hard to argue against. I can't help but hear it in my head when i think of the anime. The outro is however severely lacking and really missed it's mark in my opinion.

Characters and development get a solid and well deserved 10/10. Again this is something you have to be paying attention to see, a lot of thought went into these characters, there are no cheap comic relief, there are no cop out characters and even minor characters feel necessary to the overall development of the story.

Enjoyment? Subjective. I enjoyed it though, and you will to if, as i stated above, you fall into the target audience. An 8/10.

Overall this is a pretty good series and I wish there was more of it to enjoy. It would have been really nice to see where it was heading.
