Fairy Tail is one of my favourite animes that's currently running. The story drifts away from the usual guy/girl wanting to improve his skill and combines battles with explaining not only the main character, but the rest of the teams past. One of my favourite aspects of the plot is that the arcs are usually based mainly off of one character (Tower of Heaven Arc-Erza, Delioria-Gray, etc.) but everyone's included.
The characters aren't anything special; there's the strong and confident idiot, the guy that has a rivalry but is still really close with that idiot, the weak(ish) newcomer, and tough girl people are afraid of at first. But each character has a story behind them that affects the plot and the other character.
I never get bored when I'm watching Fairy Tail, since the arcs are usually really different yet connected in some way. I just feel that since Fairy Tail is often compared to One Piece and Bleach, people just assume it'll be a typical shounen anime even though it's a lot more than that. It involves friendship, trust, your past, mistakes, as well as battles and pretty original abilities. Give Fairy Tail a chance before you give it up.
