It’s funny because when AOT first started airing, I was actively watching it… but I stopped because I wanted to get through it with a certain friend, which never happened. Recently, I decided to finally get around to watching it again… and so here are my final thoughts regarding season 1!
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are fantastic protagonists for the show. They are well thought-out, strong, and likable characters… And that’s how many of the characters in this show are, they’re all complex and well written and captivating! In addition, the plot does a good job of showing how much these characters struggle, making the moments of their success feel incredibly satisfying… I was so proud of them every time they had a little win!
However, the biggest problem I had with the show, was having to believe that society remained stagnant for 100 years, while they had looming titans ready to take them at any moment.
Think about how much our society has changed in 100 years? Fashion has changed, weapons have changed, tech has changed… We have evolved so much in that span…and to think that their society didn’t, especially considering how at risk their survival was, just perplexes me.
They should have created better weapons in that time to protect and fight them against the Titans, ways to get information on the titans, setting up booby traps to keep the titans from getting close to them… like pits, land mines, a moat, or even a ring of fire! Their necks were their weakness, they could have set a trap that if a Titan steps on a certain spot then arrows get shot at their necks…
What about fighting them by using gas or poisons … Grenades…. Bombs… they could have developed specialized arrows like with bombs so they wouldn’t even have to fight them up close to get their necks.
They should have reformed their fighting styles and/or plans… they could have cut off their appendages first then gotten their neck before their bodies regenerated…The fact that they continue to use methods that aren’t working and literally sending people to their graves instead of trying to find a better alternative to fight these things is preposterous!
They should have also gone underground or potentially set themselves up in a dome, which would’ve protected them way better than that measly wall system!
Lastly, they should have also discovered more about the Titans than their necks were fatal… I can’t believe that in 100 years, they only RECENTLY caught some titans to do experiments on them… like? It makes the people seem so lazy and weak… and that to me is so horribly frustrating.
You’re telling me that in 100 years, only Eren is the only one that doesn’t want to resign to their fate?
Needless to say, I have very polarizing thoughts…. There is a lot of good story-telling, a lot of amazing characters, and I still enjoyed watching it despite my critiques, but it does have major plot holes….
That aside, I still definitely recommend watching it!
