Mixed Feelings
This might seem like a strange tangent to focus on, but please temporarily trust me when I say that this is the core problem I have with the show. I will explain the problem, then hopefully it becomes clear why I am focusing on this point.

Enjoying Bocchi the Rock depends on your tolerance to the shy character archetype. As for me, I find it the most annoying to watch. Shy characters will, most of the time, result in very uninteresting interactions that don't push anything forward. For example, a short tempered character might create conflict. A stupid character might do something funny. Character personalities are a tool a writer can use to add entertainment to the show, whether it be through dialogue, interactions, plot, etc.

What does a shy character do? The exact opposite of that. Being shy entails that you try to avoid interactions. In Bocchi the Rock, the main character is the exemplification of that. Every time a character wants to do something, the main character, Hitori, will have the predictable reaction of trying to end it. Wanna eat lunch? No I'm shy. Wanna go to the beach? No. Instead of turning water into wine, Hitori turns something into nothing. It feels redundant to watch her but sadly, she is the protagonist.

I will grant Bocchi the Rock that it at least builds a backstory around why Hitori is shy. It is also a story of how she tries to break out of her shell and how she does so. However, it was still painful to sit through and it doesn't feel like I got enough enjoyment to offset my displeasure. However, I recognize that others might not hate shy characters. If that is the case, feel free to check it out.
