Makoto Naegi's Worst Day Ever is absolutely worth the read for any Danganronpa fan.

On one hand, Makoto might seem like someone obvious to write a light novel about because he's the protagonist. On the other hand, it might seem obvious NOT to write one about him because he’s very generic- clearly so the audience can project themself onto him.

The compromise seemed to be an extremely short light novel at only 25 pages, and I think this was an excellent choice.

If Makoto Naegi has anything going for him, it's his optimism and his luck. He's a very admirable hero because despite how...unassuming he is (lets just say his frail appearance is charming), he still stands heroically and does not give up, and this makes him stand out a little more from other generic brunet VN protagonists. Luckily, the author of the LN knew to make this an important part of his little backstory chapter, and it's heartwarming to read.

The other thing interesting about him is his luck. Originally his "ultimate lucky student" status was just an excuse to get an audience-insert into the story, but the writers of Danganronpa also knew that the idea of "ultimate luck" was too interesting to pass up, and worked it into the story; there are hints of it in the first game, but the more Danganronpa content comes out, the more they play with the idea, and the more it shines.

The author of this LN also knew that Makoto's ultimate luck needed to be an important part of his backstory chapter, and they did very well with it. It focuses very much on the idea of ultimate luck as we've seen it manifest itself across both characters that have it- in particluar, good luck that is disguised as bad luck.

The author knew what Makoto had going for him and was able to expertly use both of those to draw audience attention to a character who does not stand very well on his own for the perfect amount of time.

Give this a read if you have a free afternoon.
