I dont know the hype it gets? Seriously, Frieren is one of those series that was pretty good back when anime title releases where routinely adequate with a decently creative concept and art. Despite that, the animation isn't mind blowing, the music doesn't give crazy highlights or mind provoking feelings.

It has the same flaws as the anime, in which the greatest aspects of the title constantly miss target. The whole point is that time works differently to Frieren, and her greatest mistake is only realized after the Hero party is all but gone. Yet, as Fern and crew grow, how does that subplot work? The stakes couldn't be lower at any point, and there is a lingering lack of agency. Yes, she acknowledges and changes to adapt to more appropriate responses to the short lived nature of humans, but aside from that, there isn't anything that REALY pushes the line of narration. Next, the side characters don't advance that narrative that greatly either. So its really sits a level where its good, and even great by todays standards, but it's not a Magnum Opus of animation. That's why I see it as a 8/10, above average, highly recommendable, nothing more or less.
