Shield hero is Isekai which differs from classical Isekai, or is it? Well it used to be... When I first came across the first season, Shiled Hero surprised me as my expectations were classical cliché show. However story was well executed with a solid tempo, interesting charaters, plot twists and fun fights. All these things cannot be said about third season at all. Thing that latest season does
well is sloping into mediocrity. My boredom was that high, that I occasionally couldn’t even keep my attention from disturbing
elements like phone, dog or scratching my ass. This happens to me very rarely as I always try tu fully focus, but my interest was
as low as child workforce costs in China throughout majority of the show.
STORY:5/10
Actually first 3 episodes started promising. Plot makes sense with clear purpose and solid tempo which even builds some anticipation. This doesn’t last long as plot starts to focus on gathering of rest of the heroes, which is exact moment where my enjoyment went down with each episode like Charlie Sheen’s acting career after his HIV confession. Whole story revolves around the fact, that all other heroes are stupid, brainless, useless piece of crap. Why are they even here? All of the side heroes were overpowered by side characters from Isekai world. Wouldn’t it be easier to make them fight instead of heroes which are basically exact opposite of this word meaning?
Mid part of the show completely loses it’s tempo. After joining of the hero of the sword show slips into cliché Isekai narrative which you’ve already seen many times in different animes. There are interactions like obtaining a new monster companion, fighting dragon AGAIN, predictable outcomes or over and over interactions around cooking which are most of the times almost meaningles.
Last episodes are better in terms of pacing and atmosphere, but I just cannot emphatize with bow hero. In consenquence of lacking in quality of his character there was little interest in whole story as a piece from my side. More so there was clear outcome of his
redemption, because they need him in the future and cannot basically hurt him. This resolves in redemption and rescue of the character who doesn’t even deserves it, but it must be done. It’s clear how it ends which destroys any anticipation and intension.
To sum it up MOST of the plot is static, rushed and predictable. Story drags on as a toddler's snot, even looses it’s weight or doesn’t make that much sense thanks to excessive naivety of the heroes. Also situations in which heroes find themselves are very similar
and almost feels repetetive. Last episode was little bit of an redemption which was practicaly a little prequel of next season which seemed much more interesting then whole 3rd season plot. After finishing season three you feel like nothing major happens
and story pass by without any development.
CHARACTERS:5/10
Most of the new characters are bland, boring or generic. Only characters with some pontentional are Atla and maybe Sadina. To be fair Sadina is also nothing special, but at least serves as some funny addition. Other kid characters from the village which names I don’t even remember are just here doing nothing interesting. Then we have generic Kuudere, blonde tanned skinned gal chick or demo version of Charizard. It’s obvious that not all of the characters can be innovative and top-notch, but when there’s introduction of quite a few of new characters I would expect at least half of them to be above average.
Main characters are basically same at the end of the season as they were in the first episode, so expect no major character development. This is probably okay as plot is not focusing as much on them, but more like on other heroes. Speaking of heroes there comes some issues. There are boundaries on how thickheaded and gullible person can be. Well not in case of our STAR TRIO which decided to believe someone which is the least trustworthy person not in this show, but maybe in whole Isekai genre. Thing is they knew what kind of person she is and yet... This wasn’t credible at all and fact that they even want me to emphatize with those idiots by showing me few flashbacks of their past, please don’t it doesn’t matter. Your past doen’t apologize your current stupid decissions.
Melty is character which deserves few sentences separately. Obviously she is a bitch and one of the most hated characters which makes her very well scripted. It’s a pitty that two major interactions of hers are of the same mintage. As was said the credibility of two heroes faling for her promises and even for her as a person after seeing what she’s done to Motoyasu or Naofumi and her trial is at very last low. Character of her qualities either hated or not should be used more meaningfully or interestingly.
Rest of the characters are allright. Main one which comes to my mind is Queen which has my sympathies as a good character surrounded by idiots except of her daughter.
ART:6/10
New artwork looks alright on the other hand it’s nothing mind-blowing. The plus is that this seasons art is a lot better then second and fits the Shiel Hero world well, but not like second season sets a high bar in these terms... On the other hand there are Isekai shows which looks much better in compare like Mushoku Tensei, Eminence in the Shadow, Konosuba etc. In terms of artwork static animations looked very promising just as rendering of the nature and surroundings. Whenever it’s classic animation all looks solid, but some movement kinda seems slopy. CGI of the Gaelion was awfull especially when he takes off and fly, it looked like from some first season of an B tier anime.
SOUND:8,5/10
Opening is very enjoyable song which gets you hyped up for the episode (all the more disappointed you can be later). Ending song of the show is exact opposite as it slow things down, but it’s also nice to listen if it’s style suits you. Sound effects are actually pretty good and fiting. Music throughout the anime also passable.
ENJOYMENT:4/10
Probably because of my wide range of viewed Iseaki I just couldn’t hit the note of this season. It started quite well, but as the show progress I found myself bored, irritated by some stupidities and recognized a lot of generic aspects of Isekai genre.
OVERALL:5/10
This season is best to watch in situations when you came back from work, school or just had a busy day and you want to switch off while watching anime without serious topic or drama. Moreso you will be able to do another activity while watching and despite this
catch everything during each episode and finding that nothing major happend since it started and you’re 15 minutes through. That’s basically description of the plot for most of the episodes. Season three is deffinitely a step for the better in compare to last one, but
still a lot worse then the first one. Lot of things could be done more originally or overall better. Do I think it’s a bad show? Honestly not, but it has nothing spectacular to offer. Consequently big portion of the audience forget it exist till 4th season will be announced.
Let’s hope that fourth season will be even better than average!
