Mixed Feelings
D.Gray-Man traces the journey of 15-year-old Allen Walker as he strives to defeat the Millenium Earl, aided by his allies in the Black Order. Exorcists, members of the Order, aim to locate and safeguard scattered Innocence shards globally. The narrative revolves around the conflict between the Noah Clan, under the Earl's influence, and the Black Order.

While its concept lacks originality and often feels like a dramatized Bible story with its strong Christian themes, it overcomes this preachiness through compelling character development. The initial episodes may seem dull, and a significant filler arc during the search for Marshall Cross disrupts the flow. It also falls into the common anime trope of inconsistent character deaths and resurrections.

Despite these flaws, D.Gray-Man appeals to fans of shounen/adventure anime due to its character development and progressive storyline. However, loose ends and unanswered questions leave us with a sense of disappointment. The animation and art style evolve throughout the show, initially criticized for plain backgrounds and sketchy animation but later becoming more polished with a Victorian English aesthetic.

Character designs receive mixed reviews, with some dull designs and odd choices like lv1 demons as big metal balloon things. The lv2 and lv3 demons, however, offer more visually interesting designs. Sound, including voice-overs and music, is deemed mediocre, with opening themes being a highlight. Characters, despite some clichés, inject humor and color into the show, with Allen standing out as a non typical shounen protagonist. The Noah Clan members exhibit familiar archetypes, with Tyki being a standout.

In summary, D.Gray-Man is a somewhat cliché with an old-school art style and a mediocre soundtrack. Recommended for those seeking a lengthy adventure/shounen anime, it may require patience in the initial episodes. It becomes gripping after a slow start, but dedicated viewers are needed to fully appreciate it.
