Seiken is a tricky one for me to evaluate. On one hand, I’m a sucker for rather generic fantasy settings with hot girls, on the other hand I can’t help but feel like this was a let down. Somewhat promising post apocalyptic setting that really didn’t get explored much, lacklustre side characters and some bad animation. While I overall enjoyed it, I wouldn’t call this a must watch.
I’ve known about this series for a few years now and hadn’t read the LNs because readers told me the story was generic and boring after the first volume or so. For fantasy LN readers, who normally have much higher tolerances for that type of stuff to say that, threw me off a bit. But after this season I can definitely see why they felt that way. This series doesn’t do anything particularly well. It’s got the usual demon lord reincarnated as a nobody at a magical school trope, but it’s not executed as well as Maou Gakuin or hell, even Finest Demon Lord does it better. It even does the same Maou Gakuin “1000 years later” meme but worse. Everything just feels very bland in this show.
The author establishes a post apocalyptic world in which humans are fighting for survival against monsters called “voids” and their only hope is the students of so called Excalibur academy who can wield magical weapons. Now while that sounds somewhat cool, albeit generic, it’s not executed well. They hardly scratch the surface with the world building, and nothing ever really happens. I mean most of the show is some rinse and repeat of Leo and Selia flirting, voids attack, Selia goes to fight and gets defeated prompting Leo to come save her. I mean, what was even the point of her joining the military/void fighting service if she gets beat up in every fight… Bath scene. The end.
Oh and speaking of bath scenes, don’t get me started on the fanservice or lack thereof. It’s so wild to me that in an anime done by passione with character designs this hot, there’s almost NO fanservice besides the girls thighs in garter belts or a shower scene. Passione, the studio know for Isekai Meikyuu and DxD.. my disappointment was immeasurable with that.
The animation is really bad in this one. Speed lines galore and many scenes look like actual fan animation rather than professionally done. It’s pretty bad. The character designs are good though.
Despite the complaints I have with the pacing, not exploring the world building etc, I still enjoyed watching the show. What can I say, I like waifus. I even went out and got a few of the books in hopes of getting more to the story. But while I liked this one, I recognise it’s not going to be for everyone. It’s rather generic, doesn’t do anything particularly well and can at times feel repetitive. Not to mention the lack of fanservice. A shame, this one could’ve been great.
Seiken gets 7 out of 10.
