I thought this anime was amazing! It popped up in my 'recommended for you' row, and I decided to give it a try, even though the reviews weren't great. There were a few things I wasn't so fond of, but the overall story made up for those few flaws.
If you're on the fence, I'd say give it a try. It isn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least watch the first three episodes and then decide for yourself. In my opinion, that's the best way to know. Better to try it out than not try at all, right?
Anyways...here's my detailed analysis:
Animation.
Don't get me wrong, the animation overall is incredible. There are just some scenes that alter the appearance of each character and, on rare occasions, take away the gravity of a heavy situation due to the (unintentional) look on a character's face. I feel like there are also some problems with the main female. There are certain minor things that sometimes take away the overall message from a scene. Well, maybe not minor, if you get my meaning. This girl has really big boobs that serve as a distraction more than anything else.
Other than those very few scenes, the animation is amazing. Each character has their own way of moving and their own technique when fighting. The monsters in this anime are astonishingly well-done, and the artwork somehow manages to capture the danger these creatures pose, just through their design.
Plot.
I've been searching for an anime worth my time, and I was not expecting to be drawn so much into the plot. There's the overall plot and some 'mini' plots spread throughout the story. Each episode is different, but each one also ties the whole thing together in a way that's both easy to follow but also mysterious enough to keep you on your toes. The overall story makes sense, especially for an anime like this one, and it does an incredible job depicting what the characters are trying to do and where they're trying to go. Sometimes, there isn't a clearly defined path for the characters, which I personally thought was great because sometimes we don't have a clearly defined, well-thought-out goal either. So...I loved it.
Characters:
I've read in the reviews that some people dislike how they're unable to sympathize and empathize with the characters, which is a pretty big thing an audience needs when watching an anime. I, personally, was able to sympathize with the characters, and maybe that's why I loved them so much. I believe that the reason people struggled with feeling sympathy was because this anime tends to focus more on the plot than the characterization. Because of this, there are many things that happen in the first few episodes that leave you kind of left trying to figure out what's happening.
With so much concentration focused on this, many things become dependent on imagination and an open mind, which makes it increasingly difficult to focus on anything else.
Despite this, I love the characters in this show. Each one is well-rounded, in my opinion. There are little things each character does that really make you wonder the reasoning behind why they do those things, and each character has certain skills that really get you thinking about why they needed to learn those skills in the first place. For example, one character has exceptional street smarts, something you really wouldn't expect from said character.
Each character has their own personality, goals, and roles in the story, and they make sense. The anime makes them human, which other animes sometimes fail to do. I feel like some people don't like how some of the characters' goals aren't clearly defined, but I thought this made the anime all the more interesting because of the depth it gave them and the opportunity for each character to grow.
