I think they wanted to do something Evangelion-type, where the mechas are just a complement to the characters, their development and relationships. I get it, and in a way I find it interesting, but it didn't work out at all!
I still don't understand what the mechas provide for the characters, none of them are afraid, none of them feel like they don't have to be there, it simply serves to put a girl and a boy in a suggestive position and form the initial ships XD
This could have been good, that the "connection" they must have to pilot was developed and deepened... but nothing, there was nothing.
The connections between the characters feel forced, 02 and Hiro, Kokoro and the other guy, the love triangle, Gorou's love for Ichigo, the lesbian coming out of the closet... everything, all of that feels put in just for the sake of it. , there is no credible justification for any of these things.
There were interesting things, like the chubby boy disorder, or the topic of parenthood, but everything feels like an embellishment for the main attractiveness and at the same time the main problem of this series... Hiro and 02.
They have, 0 fucking chemestry. Hiro has no personality and never feel in love with 0 two, there was never romance. She just appeared and he was like; "oh well she´s my gf then." 02 its not that good, she´s charismatic and pretty, yes, but nothing more, she´s not complex, she is just made to be the face of this thing.
I had expectatives for this because, not only the "complex" history that this tries to be, also beacuse this was writted by Kentaro yabuki, yes, the same writter as to love ru. I really loved to lo ru, but it wasn´t really a serious thing, so after all the problems that this man came through, when it was announced that he writted a more serious history i was really excited about it, but when i saw how pretentious and mediocre it turned to be i was really sad....
The only thing i really liked was the art, the animation was soo pleasing to look at, i really liked it... Also Ichigo and 02 remind me of Haruna and Lala from To Love Ru, They are so similar. And the plot where a pink-haired girl appears and treats the MC as a boyfriend also reminded me of to love ru, so i saw it as a tribute to his previous work and that made me kinda happy.
