Beginning :re felt like a great continuation of the original TG. The themes and immersive character writing felt reminiscent of the original series but the environment was refreshing, and the newer characters were great additions. But as it continued I felt my head swell as I was unable to keep up with so many new characters (not to mention characters rarely die so you've gotta remember them) and none of their personalities or experiences really added to the overall plot. And the amount of action increases to a degree that fighting seems to be more important than the actual story. In all of this mess, we lose sight of Kaneki, who's supposed to be the main character and his intentions which is legit the whole ass story.
I really enjoyed some moments but they weren't given the space to breathe and the weight of them was not nearly as much compared to in TG. I am still biased towards :re because I think its original ideas were still very interesting, but it's clear Ishida's publishers wanted a shorter story and none of it was edited down as it should have been for a more satisfying conclusion.
