Wow what can I say about Guilty Crown? First time I watched it I gave it a 3. I don't vive out many 3s. I must have hated it with a passion. But then I forgot about it for a few years because compared to Code Geass it is forgettable. Watching the show again I recognized a few scenes but had forgotten the plot. When I logged in after my second viewing to give the show a 9 I saw my previous ranking of 3. How is this possible? I was very confused... Perhaps my expectations?
First viewing would have been close to when I saw Code Geass. May have made it look like an inferior clone (Not untrue). I may have also expected to see a genius protagonist with an iron will change the world for what he believes in. But despite everything looking the same Guilty Crown delivers none of that. So that may have been very frustrating. I may have wanted to feel good or have an anime power trip, but this show was depressing.
The second time I watched (Having forgotten or suppressed the first) I was impressed by the dark realism.
Normal people in tough situations doing aweful things? That checks out.
Accidentally giving your show's ultimate power to an awkward idiot? Bold choice, I was curious to see what happens.
The rise of fascism in a civilized school? Wow powerful commentary on the darkness within normal people and their willingness to follow a strong dictator in desperate times.
Comentary on the corupting nature of power? Yep
After watching so much anime it was perhaps refreshing to see something so different.
In both viewings I hated most of the characters. They abandoned or simply had no guiding principals. They made mistakes hurt others and were easily manipulated. Perhaps today's political situation made these terrible people more realistic and relatable or perhaps age has made me open to more cynical stories?
Want to find the sad truth of what happens when Geass is given to a slightly below average guy rather than to Lelouch? This show has you covered! Want a fun feel good adventure? Keep walking.
