While I agree with most people that the show starts out rather silly, keep in mind that this is only the first season. Throughout all the silly moments, there are bits and pieces that allude to the bigger plots brewing behind the school drama. Although the show has mostly focused on the light-heartedness of a typical school-aged comedy, the side characters engulfed in their dark controversies unbeknownst to the main character slowly build up tensions around the plot. The main character Suletta Mercury's naivete personality does not just make her unlikable, it actually is a very strong reflection of her upbringing and her controversial stance (and potentially controversial origins).

Contrary to most of the other Mobile Suit Gundam series, The Witch from Mercury has an almost childish start and is most comparable to Gundam AGE. However, the premise of the story feels more mature and digestible. This is, however, nothing like some of the more hardcore Gundam series focused on the horrors of war (looking at you, Universal Centry timeline).

The Witch from Mercury had a prologue to set up the plot concept of GUND-ARM, and then uses this first season to set up the premise for the progression of the rest of the story. I would think of this as something like Clannad and Clannad After Story; the second season will get into the real grueling plot of this show. The first season is undeniably slow-paced and filled with glee, seemingly innocent school drama, but once you complete this first season, you will undoubtedly look forward to seeing what's in store for season 2!
