Highschool of the Dead is a diamond in the rough. No matter how much the studio tries to unknowingly sabotage this series by filling it with overly abundant fan service you can't help but get drawn in (especially if your a zombie fan like myself).

Most of the main cast grow out of their stereotypes towards the middle of the series and for a show thats main selling point is sex, guns, and tits, the characters are surprisingly multidimensional. The dialogue exchanged between the main cast is for the most part very well written and the topics they discuss go deeper than your typical zombie fare and yet, the show is still able to deliver it's jokes with perfect execution.

Besides the somewhat unoriginal looking female characters, the visuals in this series pass with flying colors. The action looks spectacular and the gun play in particular is reminiscent of Angel Beats! which is a good thing. The show does a magnificent job of depicting this lifeless japan that these kids are traveling through; the scenes with Komuro riding on his motorcycle with abandoned towns and cities in the background are masterfully done and really draw you deeper into the world the characters are in.

And finally, probably the best feature of this series, Komuro Takashi. Harem's for the most part have male leads that have the sexual libido of a wet carrot but every once in a while you get one that's a bad ass and damn it that's something to cherish! Komuro is one of the best harem leads in a while because he is the exact opposite of the cliche males we've seen in the moe drenched harems of the past few years.

If you can look past the gimmicks that the producers used to try to make this show sell, you find something much more special. when i first started watching i was expecting explosions, boobs, and weapons, but what i got (along with boobs and explosions) was a story about change, humanity, and acceptance.
