Akira (Manga) add (All reviews)

Akira is certainly a classic, worthy of the praise and comparisons when modern manga is released. Many panels are true beauties of art with quite a gripping story to go along with the pretty picture show. The story focuses mainly on the relationship between the brash and flawed but likable Shoutarou Kaneda and his best friend. The, at first, timid and lonely Tetsuo Shima.

The best part of the story: is the connecting journey they drift into together in the heart of the 2019 sci-fi city of Neo-Tokyo. A city lurking with far more than just dangerous biker gangs and pill-popping psychos. It quickly evolves into a far deeper plot, with government corruption, warring ideologies, gifted children, and all-out anarchy centered around the secret of the one only known as Akira.

Dragging aspects creep up in the manga when the focus of Kaneda or Tetsuo takes a backseat for too long, becoming too muddy for my taste. Supporting characters are still great pillars in the story, but their focus tends to go on slightly too long, making the story feel lost for a bit. It does pick back up though.

Its ending also feels like it's missing something. Not too definitive, but also too open. It makes you wish for at least another short sequel, but that's not the world we live in.

It doesn't sour the story at all. I still thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and recommend anyone that enjoys an amazing sci-fi story to read it.
