Refreshing. A vampire/undead story that falls squarely in horror, rather than romance. There is nothing erotic or romantic about these creatures, and part of the horror stems from the fact that they are monstrous in the traditional sense while retaining more of their flawed and unattractive humanity than in other fictions. The story is not so dark or philosophical that it's impossible to comprehend. The anime doesn't take itself unnecessarily seriously, but it doesn't cheapen the horror with traditional anime cuteness or humor. This is no Vampire Knight, for instance.

Not the greatest thing ever made, but still solidly different and compelling enough to grab my attention. The early episodes had enough creep-factor (and sometimes grotesque images to go along with that) that it clearly falls into the horror category, while the later episodes focus more on the physical and existential conflict between humans and the undead. The existential questions and angst are interesting but never really dominate the story as they often do in other Vampire stories.

In the end, this is solidly terrifying fun, just gory and creepy enough to really categorize as horror, with enough character development and thrills to keep you engaged even in horror isn't really your thing.
