Thoughts on the Jujutsu Kaisen Movie Dubbed.
Ofcourse god tier animation, mappa is goated, sakuga and cum all over the place during the fight scenes. Don't think I need to get into how great the animation is. Its great... Really.
Way to many flashbacks. Movie is like an hour and 30 mins long and way to much of it is spent on flashbacks. One of the things i really loved about the jujutsu kaisen anime was its pace. It was pretty fast and didn't seem to feel the need to treat its viewers as children who couldn't keep up especially in this current gen when we can literally go back and look back at every little detail on our phone or something if we ever needed to. Naruto and one piece needed flashbacks because its all being watched on a tv on a schedule you have no idea if anyone is just jumping into the show mid season or whatever but JJK understands in todays enviornment thats just unnessary. So why in a movie less than 2 hours long do we need like 10 different flashbacks?
the dub was pretty bad in spots. I would have to say that majority has to go to the main character YUTA and RIKA. I was getting cringy shinji ikari type vibes from the character and in the theatre i was watching it someone LITERALLY in a row away said "dude is basically shinji..." and another thing was how much the theatre was LAUGHING at alot of the dialogue. The scene where rika is hit by a car and someone says "call an ambulance... no call a coroner..." like i don't know if it was intentional but that entire scene the theatre was legit just busting a gut like what the fuck. Also the "will you marry me." scene was pretty cringe striaght from the get go. Its one of the first scenes that shows in the movie to and immediately when i saw it i knew i made the mistake of watching it dub.
Mugen train isn't a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination. but man watching JJKzero has made me appreciate something mugen train had that i thought was commen sense and that is sense of finality. Something thats not really talked about is the dialogue and demeanor between rengoku and akaza. Theres this air of finality. WE know, Tanjiro knows, Rengoku and Akaza knows, that this is the final battle. not because of them saying "i'll kill you..." or "THIS IS IT..." Its because of effective storytelling. Something that feels more like a "jujutsu kaisen." problem and not a "studio mappa" problem.
Rengoku vs Akaza we see limbs get cut off, we see rengoku out of breath, panting trying to muster as much strength as possible, we see blood.... alot of blood. We feel the tension in knowing that this is a strong opponent not because of "his rank" or "special grade," but because we SEE how powerful he is by making rengoku work. JJK feels like the total opposite by having both parties look pretty much fine through out the entire fight... no visible or verbal cues to indicate if either them even broke a sweat. Why should i care about a fight if both parties look absolutely fine despite landing tremondous blows on one another.
When i saw Mugen Train I told my friends it was pretty mid-above average movie but really good anime movie... 7.5-8/10... and my friends went wild telling me this was a 12/10.
the honeymoon phase is over and most will agree that mugen train was a great experience but overall lacking and i think the same will happen to JJK. Its very rushed, bad dub, best moments were when nothing about the build up of the plot was happening (maki x yuta moments or fight scenes that involved the main characters. the fight scenes for all the none movie main characters were essentally filler padding or fan service really.)
Disappointed actually that i paid $13 to watch this when i feel like i could've been just as satisfied watching the fighting compilaiton + read the plot on its wiki page.
