before starting this review i want you to know that i am using the translator to write so my english is going to suck, i also want to say this is just my personal opinion and irrelevant so if anyone reads this (which i dont think it will happen kkk) no need to be upset, I'm also open to discussions if you want to have a friendly chat of course.
Komi-san is the hottest anime this season, as a fan of life, I raised my expectations because this genre unfortunately doesn't get the attention it deserves, but I can't deny that I was disappointed.
I'll talk first about what I consider the highlight of the anime so far which is its big first episode. At first what impressed me the most about komi-san was the great creativity of his direction, I don't know much about technical aspects, but I think anyone watching will see that the first episode was very well directed, the way they used color to broadcast the feelings of the characters, the fluid animation and the creative use of subtitles, speaking in terms of story and character, the first episode was also very interesting, as it starts with a proposal with potential, which is the drama that people with communication disorders suffer in your daily life, but unfortunately these qualities are very limited to the premise.
now I'm going to talk about what I consider the biggest problem with this anime, which are its characters. I'm going to start talking about komi-san as she and the biggest highlight of this work, komi-san, as mentioned earlier, is a girl who has a communication disorder, although it's an interesting drama, I would say the way it works is not very good in the first place because this drama is everything the character is, it literally has no traces anymore besides, a lot is due to the fact that she is never brought up all her thoughts and attitudes are conveyed to us through the subtitles and the speech of other characters, the most we can get from her are some expressions, the anime never digs deep into the character's mind to try to show us some other side of her personality, worldview, or even her reflections on her life and conflicts, it's almost like she was an allegory to represent people with communication disorders, but I would say that even in that her character fails, as I don't feel that komi-san really goes through the problems that this kind of p people usually pass, people who have difficulty communicating with others are often discriminated against and excluded, in some cases they are even abused due to their behavior different from the usual one, but the only thing that komi-san suffers is just the fact of not being able to talk, other than that all people don't have any strangeness about their actions, on the contrary, she is idolized and treated like a goddess because of her appearance, I honestly don't feel that this is a situation that anyone with a communication disorder (or even people who went through problems at school and ended up isolating themselves) can sympathize or identify with. The other characters are also superficial, in general they are all character archetypes usually present in school animes and other genres, only with one difference that their personalities are much more exaggerated, unless you find them to be funny and amusing, I don't believe you will be able to get something else out of them, because like Komi-san herself, none of them have a deeper insight into their personalities or stories that make them more interesting. they're just what their name says about them no less. I'll take the time to talk about a character that frustrated me, that character and agari himiko, she was introduced as a character who also has difficulty relating with people, but unlike komi-san who can't express herself properly, agari's case has more to do with an inferiority complex and a fear of relating to others, a very interesting conflict, but one that was thrown into garbage due to the superficial way in which this was developed, in her episode agari was being watched by komi-san who wanted to get closer and try to talk, but of course they were both having difficulties to relate to agari because of her fear of being watched and komi -san not knowing how to approach her, the episode unfolds halfway like that, until out of nowhere agari just loses his fear of communicating and starts talking to her all of a sudden without them even having a conversation that would lead them to understand each other or get closer in some way to get to that situation, as if it wasn't enough to take all this conflict and resolve it overnight, we also see that agari has a masochistic side and wants to be the "puppy " by komi-san, honestly this was a very insensitive representation of people who have an inferiority complex and for a work that is committed to talking about people who have difficulty interacting it really leaves a bad image, I didn't want to think about it, but me leaves a horrible impression that just because agari is chubby and not so pretty, she doesn't deserve as much attention and sensitivity as komi-san in acting out their problems. Comedy is almost completely subjective and unfortunately komi-san's comedy didn't please me either, every comedy has key jokes that are often repeated a few times, but I think komi-san elevates it to another level to the point where I end up getting tired halfway through the episodes it's so repetitive, also the direction that was something I had praised in the first episode, I feel it gets softer and less daring as the episodes go by, simply replicating the original without adding features to make them more interesting for an animated adaptation. Anyway these were my opinions on komi-san, if anyone has really read this big boring text so far, thank you so much and sorry for wasting your time
