Reimagining of episodes 8-19 (-10/11/13/16) of the original series that changed many things mostly for the better. Shinji exhibits actual development and character growth here and his final tantrum is handled much better, even though I would have likely preferred it if they skipped that part altogether. Asuka seems more annoying, lacks her previous relationship with Kaji and they skipped over her psycho-trauma to the benefit of the character. Much more characterization and character/relationship building in this than the previous movie. Somewhat at the expense of Misato and Kaji, who seem to get less screen time overall. "Interesting" introduction for the new character Mari and lol at her breasts starting to vibrate near the end. The love triangle and competition between Rei and Asuka turned out well enough, but doesn't lead to anything. Also thankfully still largely free of pseudo-philosophy, but getting a bit silly nonetheless near the end.
