It's about the character progression and development which are important to a good story. Subaru can be the whiniest character in all of anime for all I care as long as he grows and progresses as the story continues (which he certainly did) and its way more interesting to watch a story where real progression happens instead of having a perfect character which doesn't have any development whatsoever

first of all, there are far whinier characters like shinji from evangelion and eva is still considered as a great show due to shinji being whiny actually making sense in the context of the story and the same thing applies to re:zero. They do explain why Subaru acted the way he did in the second season so the argument that re:zero is a bad show because subaru is obnoxious is a very weak argument to hate a show
