This film was the start of a shift in the series. It went from being one that was focused on the frantic task of having to save the world, to one built around the pursuit of power. It takes everything you know about the Dragon Ball world and turns it on its head, completely changing the Dragon Ball series forever. It was the start of a new era.
The most redeeming thing about this film is that even while it is trying to create this situation where you know the world is in this constant state of danger because of the nature of Beerus, it doesn't ever forget to keep the tone lighthearted at times. It has strong uses of comedy in order to keep it from feeling heavy like DBZ did throughout the series. This is a shift in modern shows. Even though you know there is potential imminent destruction looming, you can't help but laugh at Vegeta's attempts to appease Beerus.
A lot of fans criticized Super for being more lighthearted that the previous entries in the series. But I feel like that helped mature the series. DBZ took itself too seriously at times. But Super knows the right times to take itself seriously, which is almost never. This film is all about playing the series' greatest hits, while also shifting it in a new direction for the future. I think they pulled it off successfully, even though it wasn't a fully mature effort
