The characters are well done, each one of them committing a good part into the story and the main character Kenji is is likable in that you can relate to him. Someone who is is smart, but sometimes makes mistakes. Someone who wants something and is willing to go after it. Imperfect, but likable. The best part about this movie is that really anyone could watch this, it's child friendly, it has elements of maturity and charisma that makes it so great. You know that the directing staff had a good animation budget for this film.
I highly recommend this anime if you liked Digimon (as it brought back memories of that certain Digimon movie) or animes like Dot Hack. It's something that when you start watching it, it hooks you and you have to watch it til the end.
