Story
The story is straightforward at first, but as you progress you'll find it more and more complex. This anime doesn't have a lot of worldbuilding, which I found disappointing but what can you do with an 11 episode anime? Can't expect everything to fit in it. That aside, the story made me want more with how they slowly give out bits and pieces of information regarding the world and the characters. I also really like how this story isn't afraid to say a fuck you to your face, like leaving you with massive cliffhangers or killing off characters, this makes it all the more realistic and makes you realize just what type of world this anime is in. Makes you feel for the story/characters all the more. But, I have a problem. (There may be minor spoilers): The Republic (the country they're in) is making the 86 go to war and doing all the dirty work, that's cruel and all, but they're literally treating them like pigs. Don't they realize if the people outside fighting for them just dont go and fight, you're literally all dead? And even if they did fight, if they lost you'll have severe disadvantages, and several losses can lead to defeat consequently leading up to your own death as well. From my point of view it should be the OTHER way around, the 86 being total assholes and treating the Alba like shit, 'cause they're the ones doing all the fighting.
Art
I was going to give it fair, but then i realized how they mix in 3d with 2d or CGI. With the characters and the machines it can be hard but this anime did it wonderfully. The animation was fine, the characters and other general animation didn't stand out much to me, but oh my lord was I not expecting to be hyped seeing "machines" battle. It's realistic but crazy at the same time. The battle scenes explode, fill you with surprises and just runs off leaving you to wonder wtf just haopened.
Characters
Well im being a little generous on this one. The characters don't really stand out much, except for the heroine. But she stands out in such a way that I didn't enjoy it as well. Let me elaborate. She is this overly kind and genuine person towards the 86, whereas most people aren't because they're mistaken for being "pigs". She has this really good heart and i see that a lot in MCs but I just truly don't get how she can be this ridicilous. Sure, you can have a kind heart, but the way she shows that kindness is just wrong. Like bro you're literally sitting there trying to be all nice and helpful while the people out there are legit dying! It was fine once or twice but it gets gradually annoying towards the end of the season. I really didn't see the need into adding her, but obviously we all need some anime waifus (titties as well) and seeing both sides of things is not all that bad, but imo they should've just focused this on the 86 instead, make it so you only see 1 side of things and slowly give out clues about the other sides as you go on. That gives much more mystery and suspense and is generally better imo. Also not to mention they barely gave out any info about the other enemy in the anime.
Overall its a good watch, while there may be some issues with the story and characters that aren't that important and may or may not die the next second you watch, its all good. Plus its only 11 episodes like whats stopping you lol.
