I'm pretty sure this anime is overrated because the story is within the mecha narrative (a favorite of many), it is well animated, has good sound effects, good soundtracks, good artwork, and the rest is the hype. Now I got to say I am a fan of "mecha" narratives. But my appreciation and standards to stories are quite high. Whenever I see plot holes, inconsistencies, forced twists, and unreasonable plot devices, at this levels of entertainment production I cannot help but feel disappointed. I do not mind the Light Novel, but for that reason, I respect that the studios could make something for that by figuring some changes to patch those gaps already inside the original source. But sometimes, they don't.
Since the very beginning, this anime had huge flaws. Forced emotions, inconsistent outcomes, and what I call "plot armor amnesia" (when things that should have been said, are suddenly forgotten). Bad writing? Yes. Sum to that something that really pisses me off. It looks like nowadays is pretty common for authors to find the most strangest love recipes executed in the strangest ways they can possibly imagine for the sake of making up "drama". I generally like political/military plots, but that kind of romance twists seems too jarring for this kind of context.
But is not surprising, because there is a massive context in 86. However, it means that the framework to that context lacks direction. It was certainly mediocre in its execution, leaving behind gaps here and there and forcing the story to focus on something more easy to handle, a bunch of mecha fighters and a dame in charge, and it got milked for all it's worth for the drama.
