Recommendation: A fun but inessential series for fans of magical girls. If you aren't into this genre, skip it, but it's fun if you are.

Nurse Witch Komugi-chan doesn't break any new ground, it's a straight magical girl series, the only unique gimmick being that the magical girls are also idols. It's sugary sweet and totally unserious, it would almost be appropriate for little kids aside from a small number of fanservice scenes. The main girls all have their own simple gimmick, the peppy Komugi, the shy and ultra-competent Kokona, and the publicly manly but secretly girly Tsukasa. Tsukasa gets the closest to having actual character development with her relationship with Yuto, but there's very little of that here overall. It's just them being cute and having fun together for the most part, there's not much to develop. But that's fine, they're all fun and likable characters in their own ways so they don't need to change that much to be good for the show they're in.

The story is laughably thin, to the point that the show itself regularly lampoons how pointless and unexplained everything is. The girls become magical girls to collect special Fan-C cards, which drop out of the sky and turn whatever they touch into a monster, usually to comedic effect. What these cards are, why they're being collected, or why it's a competition to see who can collect the most are questions that are never explained, and it becomes an ongoing joke that any time the girls ask about any of these things, they don't get any answers either. The monsters are simple and unthreatening and the action scenes barely qualify as such, replicating the exact same animation of a monster being destroyed by a magical beam every time for comedy in lieu of an actual fight scene.

That kind of sums up Komugi-chan's general approach to comedy. They love to repeat the same joke over and over until it becomes unfunny, and then continue repeating it after that until it loops back around into being funny again. This is obviously going to be hit or miss for some people, it's probably just as likely to piss you off as make you laugh, but I got a kick out of it.

In general the art is okay, but don't expect anything flashy or unique from the magical girls. There really aren't even action scenes as such, as mentioned above. There are a few CGI idol performances that look pretty much exactly like you'd expect, like video game cutscenes. Not good at all, but you learn to live with it if you're watching idol shows.

In short, this is a fun and cutesy series, it's exactly what it looks like from the promotional materials (maybe a little funnier than you'd expect). There's no plot and most everything is played for comedy or adorableness. Go in with no expectations and enjoy some low stress magical girl fun.
