"You'll never go anywhere unless you swing the bat." -Haruhara Haruko

FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is a weird and inspiring Anime OVA. This is mostly due to its presentation of the story. What it is, is a coming-of-age story about a boy named Naota "Takkun" Nandaba who believes that his life is not going anywhere until a self-proclaimed 18-year-old alien girl driving a yellow Vespa spots Naota and his brother's girlfriend Samejima Mamimi . She nails Naota in the head with her Bass guitar. It is the instance that the bass guitar makes contact with his head that the show takes off into something completely unexpected.
The story of FLCL is very simple. It is essentially a boy-meets-girl coming of age story with robots and trippy visuals thrown in. The art in this OVA reminds me a lot of what I see on my relatives Grateful Dead and Beatles vinyl records. The uncontrolled almost randomness of the art in the show can easily be drawn parallel to the art of Grateful Dead and The Beatles Yellow submarine. The zaniness of the art strangely compliments the zaniness of the characters.
The easiest way to explain the parallel of the art and characters is through the father. Whenever he is on screen you can expect something new to happen. Weather it be the characters being turned into manga form or just some sort of odd new facial expression. If he is on screen these are two of many things bound to happen. On a side note, this show contains my favorite anime character of all time. That being Haruhara Haruko. She is strange but she has a method to her madness. She has one singular goal throughout the show and she gets what she needs and wants to get that.
In conclusion, This show is inspirational and new. It is difficult to know much about it at first. This means if you like it I will watch it again and again and again. I myself have seen it 7 times.
