It's a Shounen with the key difference that the lead protagonist is weak and isn't special/chosen. There also isn't as much anime goofiness as most shounen.

The series follows typical shounen tropes: a growing rolodex of side characters; an invasion arc; a battle arc; a world with a power/strength hierarchy; expanding lore etc.

Although the main character shows potential with tactics, he relies on others to get through battles. In typical shounen fashion, characters bond and support him due to his tenacity and moral compass.

There isn't much in the way of melodramatic feels. No grand moments that make you jump out of your chair. But it moves along at a good pace, the story is engaging, and the characters feel consistent and well rounded.

The exception is the rather large filler arc, which was a chore to watch. I struggled through it without knowing it was filler.

The art is a struggle at first, and though it slightly improves (mainly background art), you do get used to it after a few episodes.

There are a lot of characters and some of the side ones are drawn quite similarly, so it can get confusing who is who.
