I've been an anime fan since the early 90s so it doesn't bother me this type of art. I actually prefer it simple! New anime art seems a bit off for me.
Rumiko Takahashi is a master of storytelling and character development. It took me a while to get to watch this anime because I first felt discouraged about the argument. Oh boy! I felt so grateful to give it a chance.
I've never been so caught up in a series of hers after Ranma 1/2. I gave it a try to Inuyasha and I got bored. Urusei Yatsura is pretty cute and on the funny side but it is more of a light comedy with little character profoundity whereas Maisson Ikkoku is more on the drama side with touches of comedy.
A critic from the era was impressed of the tridimensional depiction of a widow and her struggles in Maisson Ikkoku. It couldn't have said it better.
This is a masterpiece of storytelling. Go ahead and watch it!
