Hanasaku Iroha is not a 10 because it constantly rants philosophy. If such philosophy were to be uttered less often (or more consecutively) instead of cutting in during a part where one wants it least, I'd definitely give Hanasaku Iroha a 10 overall.

Story: Ohana's initiation as a worker at the inn is parallel to our introduction into the working world (a factor in determining "recommended age"). But such initiation requires leaving something behind. In Ohana's case, it is Ko. Ko represents the audience's childhood. Because we can relate to it, the story is interesting so far. Ohana now has to deal with her co-workers. It is up to the author, now, to determine how these characters will affect Ohana and her beliefs. In all, the story is great because it can be related to and it piques our interest to know how the inn will change Ohana. (10)

Art: The art is great. I'm not an expert at art but it looks good. (10)

Sound: The music was well placed -- I didn't notice the music (in a good way). The opening song is fantastic, mostly because it radiates Ohana's personality. Also, one can alter the opening song into a slow piano song, for sad parts in Hanasaku Iroha. (10)

Character: Characters nowadays lack core beliefs, unlike Ohana. Each character plays a role in Ohana's growth, and at the same time, grow themselves. Ohana questions several of her own beliefs because of the inn, and reinforces other beliefs. Such focus on character is a gem in Hanasaku Iroha. (10)

The realistic-ness of this show paired with deep characters we can care about combine forces to create a show that can potentially outrun ToraDora's characters and Clannad's sadness.
