Clannad was one of the first emotional animes I watched, and now that a few years have passed, I can tell why its pretty hit or miss for some people. The story is VERY complex, and the way the story is told as well as the connections between the characters (specifically Tomoya and Nagisa) is really abstract. It integrates pretty much all aspects: romance, slice of life, fantasy, philosophical, which only leads towards confusion for some people.

For context, this story was adapted from a "choose your own adventure" light novel, which kinda leads towards the story's ambiguity, but all in all, the story is definitely worth it, and every time I listen to the soundtrack, my heart melts a little bit. If you're into the whole "super deep" style, then you'll definitely enjoy Clannad, but if you're looking for a casual watch, I wouldn't recommend this.

If you did watch Clannad though, Clannad After Story is even better then the original.
