In 2016 Your Name turned director Makoto Shinkai from a great anime director to one of the best currently working. And in 2019 he followed up with Weathering for you. Weathering with you focuses on Hadoka, a runaway trying to make a living in Tokyo. And Hina, a mysterious girl who can manipulate the weather.
Hina is a fantastic character. She’s kind and caring for the ones she loves. But it’s how far she goes to help them that makes her so interesting. Hadoka is a lot more complex. As a character is should hate him. At no point do we see he has a bad life before. In fact it’s quite the opposite. He seems to have a good, but boring life beforehand. His parents aren’t abusive. And he makes so many selfish decisions during the film. I should hate him, yet not only does the writing make you sympathetic to him. Shinkai directs him in a way where you just can’t help but want him to succeed. The supporting characters a fun too. I especially love the little brother who Hadoka calls his Senpai.
The story is a lot more streamlined than your name. Instead of throwing multiple plot twists at you. Weathering With You opts for just one. Thus making it a lot easier to understand than its predecessor.
The animation is gorgeous! And I mean it! This has got some of the best animation I have ever see. Rivalling the very best that both eastern and western cinema has produced. Every raindrop looks like it’s been handcrafted to look as real as possible. There’s a scene that shows Hadoka eating a Big Mac. And it looks like the most delicious Big Mac I have ever seen.
While this is an unpopular opinion. I believe Weathering For You is even better than its predecessor. It’s not groundbreaking, but nevertheless it’s a tremendous piece of film.
