Wait, no watermelon? What kind of summer is this?!

Spoilers btw. A decent chunk of it is kind of predictable. I started it and was like “This is going to be like Ready Player One for anime” since it deals with the whole internet game immersion thing or maybe something similar to SAO but no, not even.

One thing that warded me off initially was that I thought it was a furry based thing (turns out that’s Beastars) since they marketed the rabbit a lot, “Kazuma”, but then I realized that there are really only 2 fursonas and they’re just player costumes which is normal in my book. But what really made me make the final decision to watch this is the description of “Kenji is your typical teenage misfit. He’s good at math, bad with girls, and spends most of his time out hanging out in the all-powerful online community known as OZ.” I’m a little bit of a sucker for the awkward quirkiness sometimes. With that, they do have their moment with Natsuki and Kenji that I really enjoyed “Make my tears stop” she says. “Right here” trying to get him to hold her pinky. *Cries even more* So he grabs her whole hand. *still tearing up* Then he interlaces his hand with hers. HIT ME WITH THAT CHEESY ROMANCE STUFF!!

It’s pretty odd though the way they introduce the plot in retrospect “I got invited to go visit this girl’s family and the next thing I knew we were married and I accidentally hacked the internet in the middle of the night and caused a satellite to crash into the nearest nuclear power plant.” you know, just the normal slice of life stuff and it all just falls on his lap pretty conveniently. The whole “targeting different power plants” thing seems inconsistent, I’m not sure if it was meant to throw them off as to which one it might be but the satellite couldn’t have hit all of the ones it had targeted.

This movie also apparently has something to do with Digimon which caught my ear, I’ve heard different things but apparently it’s super similar to the second Digimon movie which released before this one (haven’t watched so I don’t know) but they were both made by the same person and it shows, in a way I could see parts of this being similar to Digimon, and obviously the style of it. However, that being said, I enjoyed this more than the Digimon flicks that I have watched. He also made Mirai and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, which are curiously enough both time movies but couldn’t be farther apart. I look at this as a middle ground between those two, hopefully that means that each movie he makes is better than the last.

I realized I have a hate for ignorant characters, the ones that ruin a potential way to stopping the bad guy and then proceed to whine about the MCs wasting their time or whatever because he has no knowledge or understanding of the subject, it’s petty, it makes you feel salt for him the rest of the movie, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth with every character they do dirty like that in every movie.

I like the family, it was really funny when the one guy brings a super computer, the next guy brings a boat, launches it in the koi pond and then the next guy brings an army vehicle, just go “BOAT-LOAD CRAZY” if you know what I mean. Overall it’s fun.
