It was due to her appearance and attitude towards activities and the fact that she was in a dojo. The art is what sells the manga having a certain charm to it. It has many cliches but executes on them well, benefiting the story as well. Tomo-Chan is a girl! It is a short manga that's a pleasant and digestible read with many charming characters.
