Mayoiga (Anime) add (All reviews)
Sep 15, 2019
Mayoiga starts with an interesting premise, and when good horror anime is almost non-existent, an interesting premise is enough to at least get my attention. However, every other element of the show falls completely flat and squanders what could have been a decent title.

The first problem is that the cast is entirely too large. Most of the characters are whiny stereotypes that barely move from one spot over the entire run of the show. They do nothing interesting and nothing interesting happens to them in turn. Yet, the show devotes half of entire episodes to long conversations where everyone has to give their own hot take, regardless of whether or not it actually contributes anything. It's annoying.

Even when the show moves past them and tries to go somewhere with its plot, Mayoiga breaks one of the most important rules of good horror and explains its supernatural menace in detail. And when you finally know what's going on, the answer is a lot of navel-gazing, feel-good mumbo jumbo that was cribbed from much better stories.

In terms of art, animation and music, the show is bland and fails to stand out in any good or bad way. It's too "anime" to even be remotely scary, and entirely forgettable after the fact.

There are definitely worse shows out there, but while Mayoiga doesn't commit too many unforgivable sins, the final product is simply too boring to recommend.
