Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo is all about friendship, betrayal and revenge. The story of the anime series revolves around Edmond Duntes and Albert Morcerf. It starts with party in Luna where Count and Albert become friends. The rest tells, Whether the Count succeeded in his plans or Albert stopped the Count from doing so? Whether the Count lost himself to the Cave King Gankutsuou? Even though, first few episodes start with low note but the successive one really makes me crazy. Particularly, the episodes in which Count make them to remember the past which were buried deep in their hearts and repay them. I first watched this series on 2005 but I cannot complete it. Now, I did it for 3 times.

Let’s come to the core, first, the characters and their design. The design patterns are different. This is the first anime in which I ever seen the range of textures used. I think, they experimented something & it turned out to be on positive note. I admired the characters of the Edmond Duntes, Albert Morcerf, Franz d’Epinay and Eugeine Danglars.

Secondly, the narration is completely awesome. Even though, we can able to predict successive happenings but the way they conveyed is astonishing. All the credits goes to the director Mr. Mahiro Maeda and his team. I watched 16 episodes consecutively from 9th till 23rd. I never viewed any anime series consecutively like this including my all time favorites except Emma – A Victorian Romance. The only missing piece is how Edmond Duntes escaped from the prison and what’s his source of income and how he secured it? May be they forgot it or discarded it intentionally, who knows?

Finally, the background score done by Mr. Kasamatsu Kouji and Jean-Jacques Burnel (opening & closing themes) are fits in their places. Gunkutsuou – The Count of Monte Cristo, sci-fci thriller series, is indeed a fine anime worth to watch and I believe that it will definitely entertain you for at least 10 hours.
