Review: Episodes 1-3

As a show that presents character's flaws and how they overcome them, The World Only God Knows hit near dead-center.

The concept is interesting, but not the best. It is not the best because, first, The World Only God Knows is based on spirits, a very popular concept among Japanese cartoons. This shaves away some of the show's originality. There is mainstream Bleach, masterpiece Spirited Away, also-masterpiece Princess Mononoke, and a lot more. Because of the number of spirit-based shows, The World Only God Knows would be shelved as one of the many spirit-based shows. The story should have based its itself on something more original, which could have made the concept more interesting. But even though the concept is at a loss in terms of originality, the story's focus on the flaws of characters is a plus. Today, many Japanese cartoons are based on a character being pushed into a conflict, receiving a special power, or being the cause of a conflict, etc., and a chosen few are based upon characters. Death Note, Code Geass, and again Bleach are some of the many examples of shows not based on characters (I chose these shows because they are famous and easily to relate). The focus on character is highly original, and outweighs some of the show's unoriginality. In summary, the show's concept is not the best because of a hint of unoriginality, but very interesting because of its originality in a different field. In terms of story, The World Only God Knows hits near dead-center. (Story 8/10)

This show's artwork is pretty, a bit too pretty. The art is not a pain to look at, but its lack of real-ness is a turnoff. Lighting in this show is simply too bright and lacks in shadow and definition. The background is bland, compared to 5 Centimeters Per Second. The World Only God Knows' artwork is a thumbs up, but lacks two things: 1) Effective shadows 2) Detail. To effectively showcase characters, a show's art is vital. (Art 7/10)

Music that is played in this show are not distracting nor do they stand out. (Sound 7/10)

Characters in this show are interesting, but some are not used to their full potential. Each heroine's personalities are shallow (excluding the demon). On the case of the first heroine, we couldn't make out a distinct personality. What we did notice, however, was her dilemma. On the case of the second heroine, we noticed a cliche personality (self-explanatory). In the end, the heroine characters (excluding the demon) are not the best personalities one can think of. The better personalities in this series are the male protagonist and the demon. By their interactions with each other (the male protagonist and the demon), we can easily tell that he wants to move on with a dull life, and that she is highly curious and eager-to-please. These two characters' personalities shine. Being a show that focuses on the flaws of characters, The World Only God Knows does a decent job. (Character 7/10)

Because of the intriguing concept, The World Only God Knows is highly enjoyable when coupled with humor. (Enjoyment 8/10)

Overall, this show is great with some flaws, which is why this show hits near dead-center. (Overall 8/10)
