So it opens up with the main protagonist basically vanishing somewhere, and an introduction of new members of the glorious Tokyo Ghoul cast. And amazing they were. What do we have here? Some.... Uta, Eto, Ayato, Kishou, that dude who was slaying all the ghouls.... and Touka! Yes, Touka....
Eh.... what happened in the story? Who knows? Has anyone been actually paying attention?
The whole story sort of plays like radio you have running in a car, not really listening to it because you need to focus on the road or in this case, have simply better things to do than to give the anime full undivided attention.
Spoilers of the ending: there was some spat between the ghouls and the infamous cafe caught on fire, then Kaneki's friend got hurt or something and Kaneki proceeded to straight up walk for an entire episode. If I remember a single thing from this absolutely mindbogglingly entertaining anime, it is the part where Kaneki Ken, the renewed ghoul, walked, carrying his friend through the land covered in snow and swarmed with police force, not saying a word, not doing anything else.
No wonder they went for more seasons.
I also have not read the manga but I heard that they did not exactly stick to it, or that they omitted few little things so.... if that mildly infuriates you, you should still give it a go, because it is very well made.
4/10 amazing sequel we wanted, more great seasons to be expected
