Preliminary (156/? chp)
Coming out of the anime, I didn't really think much of the series as the anime was quite a painful experience. It had some laugh but it felt like the situation Tomoko appears in are just so embarrassing and you feel bad for her. The anime covers roughly the first 20-30 chapters in the manga. However, once the field trip arc happens and we get introduced to more supporting characters, this series just becomes really enjoyable.

Story: There isn't really much to the story. It's about an antisocial girl who has no friends at her high school and each chapter is usually about her doing dumb things to get friends or being in dumb situations. Tomoko has social anxiety and struggles to interaction with others. She is somehow also quite arrogant in her thoughts which can be quite annoying. However, eventually the series start delving into her actually making friends and then becomes about her interactions with her "friends". Once the series starts giving our main character Tomoko growth and friends, the series becomes much more enjoyable and even starts focusing more on our support characters and their interactions with Tomoko. It starts changing genre from a dark gag manga to a light hearted comedy with tints of yuri in it. This might deter some people but for me was a necessary change.

Art: It's not amazing but it does have quite a charm to it and it isn't difficult to discern characters from one another. The art style is charming enough which is all that is necessary for a manga like this.

Character: The series began with mostly just her brother, her middle school friend and her cousin. All three of them were great characters in their own right and their interactions with our main character Tomoko was one of the better highlights. Sadly our main character Tomoko was just quite unlikeable which was unfortunate. The only reason we cared was simply cause she has relatable issues that many readers have. However, once the field trip arc happens and we get introduced to more support characters. We realise that Tomoko isn't the only weird one in school. We see Tomoko grow as a character and actually make friends while becoming less arrogant as well. Although, she does still make straight comments and dirty jokes but that works with her character. The highlight eventually becomes her interaction with her classmates and it is such a fun interaction. This does put her brother, middle school friend and her cousin slightly in the background now but with her school life being less painful to read, it is okay for them to not be forefront anymore.

Enjoyment: As stated many times in the review, after the field trip arc this series became so much more enjoyable and less painful. For me I could relate and sympathise with her issues but the series was no Oregairu. When the series started to get its own momentum, it then truly became a enjoyable series.
8/10

Overall: If you didn't enjoy the anime then give the manga a chance as it starts to evolve in a spectacular way.
