Once again I am forced to leave my house in order to see another Dragon Ball movie in theaters. Over the past few years, the Dragon Ball franchise has seen 3 new movies, a brand new series, and finally managed to get an actual fighting game for once. While Dragon Ball is certainly not what it use to be, there is no denying that anything recent has come even close to the quality of GT. BOG was enjoyable but a bit disappointing since most of the movie was a build up for a 10 minute fight. It was different and a good way to start off the series again. Resurrection F wasn't that original but for the most part, it was everything I could ask for in a DBZ movie. It hyped up Frieza getting resurrected, showed characters such as Roshi and Gohan who never get to fight anymore, and of course had Vegeta and Goku fight Frieza along with some new transformations. Super isn't great but I still find it entertaining since its Dragon Ball. Before watching Super: Broly I kind of expected it to be great from the trailers and no surprise, I loved it.
Story: 7
I think its important to understand that Dragon Ball isn't known for its plot. Not even for today's standards but ever since Z, the story wasn't Dragon Ball's selling point. Dragon Ball's stories are very simple and easy to understand while still having some depth to them. This movie is no exception to an extent. It's not as simple as Resurrection F's plot but isn't as plot driven as BOG. It's a very good in between.
The first 20 or so minutes is a retelling of the first Broly movie and a bit of the Bardock special. I don't want to get too in detail but I did enjoy what they changed. Plus Gine is canon now so no complaints there. After that, the movie takes place in the present where more time is spend on Broly, Paragus, Frieza and some new enjoyable characters. After a bit, Goku and Vegeta fight Broly and yeah, that's cool. Like I said, the story isn't amazing or anything but it's good. However, there are some dumb plot holes. Why is Bardock the only saiyan to realize that Frieza is going to kill them all? How is Vegeta able to do the fusion dance successfully on his third try? Why doesn't Gogeta kill Frieza? How is Frieza able to survive 90 minutes with Broly? Why is Vegeta able to go Super Saiyan God? Why is Gogeta so strong if Vegeta and Goku were both exhausted after fighting Broly? None of these ever ruined the film for me obviously, but they are dumb. If you're a fan of Dragon Ball I'm sure you'll enjoy it besides the minor complaints I have with it.
Art: 9
I think its safe to say that everyone loves the new art style for this film. It's just really appealing to look at at fits in well with the Dragon Ball universe. My only problem would be that the first half of the movie was noticeably "worse" than the rest. Don't get me wrong, it still looked great, however I would have liked to see a bit more animation and movement. There were just a few times when a still shot lasted too long I guess. However the last 30 minutes/Broly fight was amazing. The animation was insane and I'm so happy that Dragon Ball can look this good for once. But yeah, no problems here. This is the best Dragon Ball has ever looked.
Sound: 8
Super's soundtrack is pretty good and this movie continues that trend. Instrumentals are really solid and some of the other new songs like Blizzard are great. The dub is still as great as it use to be. Sean Schemmel and Christopher Sabat still do an amazing job as Goku and Vegeta and the others are still great. Again, nothing wrong here unsurprisingly.
Characters: 8
It feels like I'm repeating myself but its Dragon Ball. You're going to enjoy the same characters that you've enjoyed for the last years or even decades. Broly is entertaining and I look forward to seeing what Toriyama does with him next. The other new additions are also good like Cheelai.
Enjoyment: 9
Like I've been saying, its Dragon Ball. What else do you expect? I loved so many things about this movie. The story was good with some few complaints, the action was amazing, and its always great to see Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza in one movie again.
In conclusion, go watch this movie. While this may not be your absolute favorite Dragon Ball film, it definitely was mine. I still find the first Broly film to be my favorite out of the original 13 DBZ movies, but I enjoyed this one decently more.
