Preliminary (6/13 eps)
Seishun buta Yarou is very confusing initially because the synopsis does very little to explain the story and the given genres made it look generic superficially that even I was tricked. However, this show is definitely more than it seems and has become my favourite anime of fall 2018 despite being just 6 episodes in.

Story: The story follows a very similar format like monogatari- 1 girl per arc taking up 3 episodes each while the environment it gives off shares some but not exactly, similarities to oregairu. The story explores the adolescent syndrome where strange phenomenons happen to teenagers when faced with problems. This is actually a pretty good premise into exploring social stigmas, society views and just overall, growing up. While the story might not be original, the execution is definitely there. I found myself being pretty engaged by the story regardless.

Art: The art is done by CloverWorks from A1 pictures which is a studio I'm pretty fond of for their consistency in production. The art may not be outstanding or insanely over the top colourful but it works for seishun buta. Its straight to the point, you see a boy in a school uniform, you get a boy in a school uniform. Nothing overly flamboyant.

Sound: The opening is very catchy and works pretty well with the series but the main eye catcher would be the ending themes which are sung individually by each girl for each specific Arc. E.g. Seto Asami for Mai's arc and Touyama Nao for Tomoe's arc. The ending is shorter than the typical 1.5 minute length but its still enjoyable.

Character: This is what really makes the show shine in my opinion. Some might not agree but the main character feels like the child of Kyon from Haruhi suzumiya and oregairu's MC. The main character, Sakuta is the complete opposite of Shonen main characters. Instead of being oblivious to the surroundings and written as a fictional person, the writer actually made he seem like he was based off of a real actual person. The way he speaks his mind immediately and just does things instead of fannying about is really what makes him shine. The deuteroganist, also the main girl, Mai, is pretty nicely written as a sweet girl with a personality that complements Sakuta pretty well. The banter between these 2 is just very very refreshing. Nothing cliche but just enjoyable to watch. The supporting side cast do fulfill their roles and would probably be explored on in the near furture as the series is still ongoing

Enjoyment: I'll be very honest, I watched the first episode expecting this to be some generic ecchi and man was I blown away. The enjoyment of this show is something I've not experienced in quite a while. It's down to earth with some extra elements such as the adolescent syndrome but man having a main character with balls of steel such as Sakuta really fills in the part of my enjoyment without me having to facepalm 20 times whenever I watch an anime with an oblivious , beta male main character.

Final Verdict: Seishun Buta is one of my favourites for fall 2018. I would highly recommend checking it out. Some people may not enjoy it but maybe this genre isn't for them and that's totally fine. If you're looking for a refreshing romantic comedy with some actual plot and a movie already announced. I implore you to watch this series as it's one of the must watch shows for fall of 2018. Cheers
