Preliminary (4/12 eps)
Before I start I’d like to mention that this anime isn’t for everyone. If you’re not good with disturbing themes then I’d recommend another anime. Unlike most light novel adaptations this anime isn’t a happy go lucky isekai. This show will have graphic scenes and will have lots of goblin slaying(duh).

Relevance to the source material: 9/10
So far this anime has been faithful with the light novel. Only issue is the fact that the anime skipped through the back stories of some of the minor characters in the first episode.

Animations:8.5/10
Great animations. Very smooth though one thing I found odd was the fact that the goblin slayer was animated with cgi while the goblins were not. Though I didn’t dislike it in general I feel that the goblins should have also been made with cgi rather than being hand drawn. As for the cgi used with goblin slayer I think it fits his character well since his character does seem a bit mechanical.

Characters 9.5/10
All the characters in the story are quite diverse and every single one seems to have a story of their own. Though the series doesn’t touch too much on the past of the other characters the mc, goblin slayer, at least gets a clear explanation as to why he does what he does and what caused him to become the goblin slayer. The comical “I want more goblins” thing that he does every time he goes to the reception desk (spoiler? nahhhh...)has a reason and the reason isn’t “cause I feel like it” or because of an obtuse sense of justice that a lot of characters tend to have in modern shows.

Setting 9/10
The world of goblin slayer is similar to dungeons and dragons. The gods throw the die and thus the fates of the heros of the series are determined. The author made it quite obvious that he is a big fan of d and d. Even the naming system in the show gives this away. Every character in the show is named by either their titles or occupations just like the pieces of d and d. The way the author built the setting is quite interesting. When watching the show I feel like I’m watching what a dungeons and dragons game would look like if it was completely and honestly animated.
Story telling devices:9/10
Goblin slayer has an interesting way of telling the story. Even though the main character is obviously goblin slayer the perspectives we view goblin slayer from are from his companions. Instead of analyzing goblin slayer from his perspective we analyze him from the perspectives of his companions. This helps keep goblin slayer mysterious and keeps the viewers on your toes. Just like his companions even the viewer can be left wondering about what could possibly be going on in his head.

Overall: 9/10
