Saekano is a bland sauce series about a bland girl that gets chosen to be a visual novel protagonist, due to the Kirito voiced, spastic protagonist that sees Megumi from afar and has an epiphany about a VN he wants to make. It’s like the creepy painter that claims that seeing a pretty girl nude will somehow burgeon a magnum opus.

• Kirito invites Megumi to be his lead heroine. He also has an artist and a writer friend who go to the same school and just happen to be insanely talented. Why DO they help him with his project when he has no other talents aside from being an otaku? My only answer to this is that this show is a fucking harem, so bullshit plots are almost required.

• Similar to all of Nisiosin’s works, every option except for the normal girl (Megumi), are beautiful prodigies within their craft. I don’t know if that’s just normal in Japan or what. I thought that after the first season, the second might go somewhere, but is ultimately very forgettable. This show primarily focuses on the appeal of pretty girls, rather than giving you a series of substance.

• Much like Sword Art Online’s Kirito this Kirito MK II is even blander and more of a self-insert character. Unlike SAO’s Kirito, this one isn’t talented at anything except for inciting useless drama and having zero usefulness to the story, except making pretty girls fight over him, while Kirito had his talent at… gaming?

• There’s the typical tsundere character and the witty Senjougahara copy-paste that has stockings and is obviously the foot fetish character. The most interesting thing for me in the series, was their strife to get their dream recognized, since I’m a sucker for those kind of things and have a major passion for visual novels.

• Most of the strife just links back to the tired, prevailing narrative of catty drama reminiscent of the Tenchi Muyo spats, so the struggle seems pathetic. Saekano is pretty to look at, but it’s as deep as a puddle. If you have watched the anime: Nisekoi, then you’ll understand how the vapidity of these two series are comparable. I give the first season on Saekano a 4/10 and the second season a 3/10.
