This review is based on the official english release of "Slayers vol. 1: The Ruby Eye."

Story: 5
The story of the first volume of Slayers didn't really impress me, it might be due to the fact that the novel is so old that I've already seen the same story again and again and it has grown stale.

Character: 7
The focus of this section will be the MC, Lina Inverse, because at the point of writing this review I have already forgotten all the other characters. Despite the author being a male himself, he was somehow crazy enough to try to make a first person story told by a narcissistic, and arrogant female main character. It was strange because halfway through the book I wondered if the author was female but instead it turned out to be a male author who was very passionate about "that time of the month." He somehow made a character (which I usually find annoying) work by making her overly female while at the same time contrasting that by making her a sorceress warrior with a mouth.

Translation: 7
There are some words here and there that made the flow of reading stop but seeing as this is an older book from 2004(?) I'll give it a pass.

Overall Enjoyment: 6
It's a decent book if you're bored and want to see what an old light novel is like. There were some jokes thrown here and there, some jokes that jab at females, and some that are extremely unfunny and excruciating to read. Some scenes drag on and on which takes away a lot from the immersion. If I were to rate this as a comedy novel (which felt like it was most of the time) I'd give it a 0. The action scenes were also lacking due to how little descriptions the author gave during the scenes. Again, most of my enjoyment came from reading about Lina's thoughts on the situation.

Conclusion:
This review is a bit late but since no one has reviewed this yet I felt compelled to do so because I am very bored and I have nothing better to do. To my surprise, it's pretty cheap on amazon. When I bought this book at a convention I expected the sell price to be high since it looked so ancient, sadly that is not the case.
