Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, otherwise known as When they Cry in English, is one of those shows.
But just because When they Cry is inventive, doesn't necessarily mean it's, well good.
This anime is split into different arks where all the characters
(1) Have happy fun time with each other
(2) Something goes wrong
(3) One of the characters goes crazy and kills the others
(4) Repeat
Its juxtaposing when the happy fun time genre is mashed in with the gory, more mature genre.
I am not a fan of cutesy, happy animes...I tend to prefer the blood and gore. Some of the episodes of When they Cry are completely devoted to this happy fun time thing causing me a lot of aggravation and boredom with this show. Each of these episodes are torture to my eyes and brain, and I feel my IQ drop rapidly.
An example of a show that implements happy fun time with gore is Happy Tree Friends. Why do I consider Happy Tree Friends to be way better than When they Cry...well there isn't 30 fucking minutes of cutesy bullshit and Happy Tree Friends gets right into the gorefest.
I have a friend who believes that this anime is a masterpiece and told me that I need to watch the entire show to get it. Maybe if When they Cry didn't have so many boring episodes, then I would watch the entire thing.
When they Cry should have chosen one genre instead of trying to implement two completely different ones. If this anime dived into the story a little bit quicker and threw away the 30 minute cute stuff, then maybe I would have enjoyed this show a LOT MORE.
Unfortunately, this show does NOT do that...therefore I hate this show and I do not recommend it to anyone.
