18 Solid episodes in all I could think was "Wow, what a fun character drama with great art, heart tugging moments, music to jam to, and a mysterious world that has so much potential." Yes, it was derivative of older mecha-animes, but it was doing a great job of making me care. I think a lot of us cared about this world and its characters, as seen from the response from episode 19 onwards.

I don't think it's fair to completely write off the work that was put in this series before the awful exposition dumps by slamming this show with a 1, but I understand the anger that came with having our time wasted.

I believe the problem stems with a company stuck in the shadow of their previous companies greatest creation, Gurren Lagann. Every main line show they have produced, besides Kiznaiver, has tried for this bombastic ending about getting bigger and bigger and BIGGER, but it almost always falls flat. This show was basically the emotions and melodrama of Kiznaiver mixed with a (watered down) version of the Eva world. It needed something similar to Asuka's gritty and personal final fight rather than a slow jaunt through a poorly budgeted space scene for three episodes.

The show tried to switch gears close to the end, but ended up hitting reverse and ruined everything behind it. The only thing is I still had a great time before the whiplash and I'd recommend watching this over another poorly animated doll commercial. Trigger doesn't always come out on top, but even their worst stuff is leagues above a lot of the competition.

7/10 - Watch up to 18 and feel the longing for more, not less.
